I’m not a runner …

I hear this a lot. Mostly everyone in our current run club said this at the start. What people don’t realise is, they don’t actually need to “be a runner” to start, they just need to start running.

But I can’t run!

Mmm, I hear what you are saying, but I wasn’t a runner one time either. I remember being an absolute fill in for school sports day, didn’t even have sports clothes, I ran in my long school pants. Not sure what was going on that day as I loved sport, but anyway, back to the story. I was a fill in for the 1500m race, which was around the school oval. I was in about year 8 or something and it felt like it took an eternity to run. I was “running” slower than a 3 legged donkey walking backwards, but in my end, I didn’t stop so I thought, maybe I am a runner? I still wasn’t sure. But I got some encouragement from the hot guy who lapped me and it spurred me on to keep going. I came second out of 3 people. And what do you know! I then took up running as a sport. It took me years to get fast or even have good technique, but I did it because I enjoyed the way it made me feel - fit.

So if you are thinking you need to be born a superstar runner with some exceptional speed … think again.

Meet the crew in our running group and you will see how fun it really can be, especially with good coffee at the end!
